Finding plans for major holidays can be extremely stressful, especially for one that celebrates our nation’s independence. Though heading to a beach and relaxing under the fireworks are annual, unbreakable plans for some, others may want to spice up their routine and do something more unusual. Major cities all around the country have special events for this momentous occasion, which you can easily find on the Internet. However if you live in or near New York, Boston, Washington D.C., or Philadelphia, here are some exciting ideas for plans you can make.
As one of the most vibrant and vivacious cities in our great nation, it’s expected of NYC to have amazing events to offer for the Fourth. During the day, head over to Nathan’s Famous for their Annual hot dog eating contest to watch impressive competitors see how many hot dogs their stomachs can handle. After that, head to Coney Island Beach for their annual Beach Party. Or, hop in a cab and head to the Financial District for South Street Seaport’s two-day music festival where bands like Wild Nothing and Lee Fields & the Expressions will be performing.
If you’re in Boston and you want to get real historic, the Declaration of Independence is read aloud from the balcony of the Old State House at 10am, right after the 9am raising of the flag on City Hall Plaza. Other events include Boston Harborfest, which spans from July 1-4, and Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.
Our nation’s capital offers a multitude of activities to beat the heat including the Yard’s Park, Georgetown Waterfront Park, and Canal Park. For a more patriotic experience, check out the National Independence Day Parade, which starts at 11:45 a.m. on Constitution Ave. Or, if you’d prefer not to be outside, The National Portrait Gallery has an “America’s Presidents” exhibit, displaying portraits, statues, cartoons, and films about our country’s presidents.
Everybody should celebrate America’s birthday at its birthplace at least once, and if you’re fortunate to head there this year, there are a plethora of activities for you! Wawa’s annual Welcome America! Party is definitely the place to be, hosting a block party, a free museum day, and free concerts. The Party on the Parkway, located on Benjamin Franklin Parkway is just one lively event that Wawa provides.
